The journey begins.....

The  concept was derived by artist Sba Shaikh of a travelling art piece for the E17 Art Trail 2015.  She wanted to showcase a collaborative piece to be part of her installation at Vestry House Museum - so she invited artist to an open call.  The idea behind this piece was that the art would have its own organic journey and a story to tell through the different artists that created it.

All participants were requested to document their journey, from receiving the piece by the previous artist - to posting the piece to the next artist.

“To create my pieces I use rich-coloured fabrics with various print techniques, which then can be embellished using embroidery or gold leaf: the play of light is an important part in the majority of the work I create. The initial inspiration of my work comes from photography. My creativity and passion is fuelled by my Muslim Indo/British heritage, the art and history of the Mughal period, the Indian Royalty and their palaces, with the romanticism of the British Raj. I then add individuality to this with anything that tickles my fancy! I have extended my art into ‘Klassy Kitsch’ label; a range of designer scarves, including a collection of ethically sourced and produced scarves from Bhuj, Gujarat and Mumbai, in India.”

Hannah Horack

Hannah Horack-Elyafi addresses existential questions from the pragmatic to deeper issues of meaning--The methodology of art, the value of art and any of our action, the presentation of pride and ego, reluctance to be seen as a fool, and the entire dependence of our existence on the Mercy of God.

With her humorous juxtapositions and striking subjects, at first glance Hannah's bold, playful work raises a smile, however the work is clearly underpinned by a deeper social commentary giving her attractive work depth and poignancy. Gender roles, religious norms and contemporary politics are all questioned, in a way that has been described as "Timely" by London's Evening Standard and "Thought Provoking" by The Times.

Emmy Tither

Emmy Tither is a multimedia artist of Peruvian and Anglo-American descent now living and working in south London. Her work explores the intersection between storytelling and psychogeography, emphasizing the effect of gender and mental health on one’s inner and outer sense of place. She mainly works in the mediums of textile based sculpture and portable tapestry.  She is also particularly interested in collaborative and community projects and as such is very excited to be participating in the E17 Travelling Art Story.
